Doyle will make his first career start Friday against the Chippewas.
The University of Massachusetts football team's final game will have a bit of a twist on Friday.
True freshman A.J. Doyle will get the start at quarterback after sitting behind redshirt freshman Mike Wegzyn for the first 11 games this season, a UMass spokesman told The Republican on Wednesday afternoon.
Doyle is 26-for-53 for 166 yards and one touchdown and five interceptions in seven appearances in 2012.
The true freshman out of Lakeville, Mass. attended Catholic Memorial High School and originally committed to North Carolina State to play linebacker, but decided a year ago that he wanted to play quarterback and de-committed.
According to a Boston Globe story from December of 2011, Doyle was among Charley Molnar's first phone calls when he arrived in Amherst.
According to the spokesman, Wegzyn is fully healthy and not facing any sort of disciplinary action. Wegzyn has 1,825 yards, six touchdowns and ten interceptions on 182-for-346 passing in 11 starts thus far.
Molnar, Doyle, Wegzyn and more will be available to comment after Wednesday afternoon's practice.
