Nick Swisher
Nick Swisher has been with the New York Yankees, but the Red Sox are looking at whether he would switch sides in the rivalry and come to Boston.

The Red Sox need help in the outfield and at first base.

Nick Swisher can offer both, and he is "on the radar'' of Boston general manager Ben Cherington, according to a report by NESN.

Swisher has had a love affair with New York Yankees fans, but the club does not appear interested in offering him a multi-year contract. The Red Sox are reportedly interested, according to New York sources.

Swisher, who turns 32 Sunday, hit .272 with 24 home runs and 93 RBIs in 2012.

Swisher's versatility, power and perception as a good clubhouse guy would figure to make him popular as a free agent target,

The Red Sox have also been reported to have interest in Lance Berkman,
who is also being reviewed by several other teams, including Houston. Berkman spent nearly 12 of his 14 seasons with the Astros, and is now a coach at Rice University.

He will delay retirement if a good offer is made, but sounds ready to leave the majors before taking a cut-rate deal.

Like Swisher, Berkman has been a switch-hitting outfielder and first baseman. Unlike Swisher, Berkman's days in the outfield are probably over as he turns 37 in February.

Boston is also interested in pitcher Kyle Lohse, who had a career year for St. Louis in 2012. Lohse, 34, went 16-3 with a 2.86 and figures to be a big free agent target, which means the cost-conscious Red Sox would have to compete with several teams.
