BOSTON — Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino sat on Sunday as expected, and he may not be ready for the start of the Toronto series on Tuesday either. Victorino had an MRI on his lower back that confirmed he has inflammation. The team's headed to Toronto for its next series — where the Blue Jays play on turf — a factor that at the least will not hasten Victorino's return.
Victorino has improved, manager John Farrell said.
"We've got to do everything at this point to make sure those symptoms subside," Farrell said. "The Astroturf throws another factor into this when we go to Toronto. Most importantly, whether it's game one or game three in that series, it's going to depend on he being symptom-free."
Victorino's sat four straight games. If it becomes clear he can't play during the Toronto series, the Red Sox likely would put him on the disabled list
"Just in talking with Ben (Cherington), when you start to get into more than half of what the 15-day DL period would be, then you've really got to look at making a decision on a roster," Farrell said. "At that point, being able to retroactive the injury date. We're still a few days away from that."
Victorino is taking medication to help, Farrell said.
"That's where the medication comes into play, that's where the treatment to relieve the spasms that he experienced," Farrell said. "He's improving and responding to all of those."
