Girls swimming: Melanie Avdoulos breaks East Longmeadow school diving record - again.
It's a good thing most high school swimming and diving teams wait until the end of the season to update their school record boards.
If not, East Longmeadow would be very busy whenever Melanie Avdoulos takes to the diving board.
Last year's Western Massachusetts champion broke her own mark for the fourth time in her career Tuesday, posting 252.85 points as the host Spartans defeated Holyoke Catholic 57-45 in a Minuteman League meet.
"She's really been diving very, very well," East Longmeadow coach Gil Gonsalves said.
East Longmeadow (9-0, 4-0) received two individual wins from Emily Lajoie, who was first in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke. Her sisters, Julie and Kelly, each won once.
Holyoke Catholic junior Meriza Werenski won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, continuing to cement her place as one of the region's elite. Teammate Delaney Dyjak won the 50 freestyle and was second behind Julie Lajoie in the 100.
"Meriza is very, very strong," Gonsalves said. "She'll have her pick of what events she wants to do at Western Mass. (on Feb. 12)."
