CLEVELAND — Red Sox lefty Craig Breslow (left shoulder tendinitis) is to start a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Tuesday. Breslow threw an inning in an extended game on Tuesday, and hit 88 mph, manager John Farrell said.
A return around the end of the month seems in line.
"Felt fine today," Farrell said. "We're probably in that five-to-seven appearance range (before he returns to the Majors). He pitches again on Friday in extended, and then he'll come to us and throw a bullpen on Sunday and then will likely begin his rehab assignment with Portland on Tuesday."
Breslow told MassLive.com on Sunday he was pain-free and that he didn't care what level he pitched at coming back through the minors.
"if I can get on the mound in regular game action, and regular game action to me — extended spring is no different than Triple-A, pick up the reins and give me a batter and an umpire — as long as I'm healthy, I feel like I'll make the adjustments in game to be effective very quickly," Breslow said.
Another Red Sox lefty on the mend, Franklin Morales (lower back), threw three innings of one-hit scoreless ball for Low-A Greenville on Wednesday in his first rehab appearance. He walked two, struck out one and threw 48 pitches, 24 for strikes.
