NEW YORK — Mauro Gomez has not been placed on waivers after being designated for assignment on Sunday and the Red Sox are trying to trade him, according to baseball sources.
Gomez, a 28-year-old first baseman, was designated for assignment to make room for Jackie Bradley Jr. on the Red Sox 40-man roster. Players designated for assignment have to be traded, released or outrighted (if they pass through waivers) within 10 days.
If Gomez were to pass through waivers, the Red Sox do think of Gomez as a good hitter and would probably make room for him on a crowded Triple-A Pawtucket roster — but the fact that he had 24 home runs with a .310/.371/.589 line last season with Pawtucket is what makes him appealing to other teams, by trade or waiver claim.
Ten days from Sunday gives the Red Sox a deadline of Wednesday, April 10, so the latest they could potentially place Gomez on waivers is Monday, April 8.
