Happy Valentine's Day?

That's what it appears to be at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.

William S. Paxton of The Connecticut Post reported Thursday that former Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine will be officially named athletic director for Sacred Heart University this coming Tuesday.

Valentine's name might be familiar to Red Sox fans. For those who are not familiar, he was the team's manager in 2012. That was when the Red Sox went 69-93 and finished last in the American League East.

Valentine was one-and-done as a manager in Boston. Less than 24 hours after the season ended with a 14-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Oct. 3, the Red Sox sent Valentine packing.

As an adult, Bobby Valentine has held a long list of jobs. He's been a professional baseball player, a baseball manager in both Japan and the United States, and an on-air baseball analyst for ESPN.

It hasn't been all baseball for Valentine, though.

He also owns and operates a sports bar named "Bobby Valentine's Sports Gallery Cafe," where he claims to have invented the "wrap sandwich."

Since Jan. 13, 2011 he has served as the Director of Public Safety for the city of Stamford, Conn.

Now Valentine will try his hand at running the athletic department for a school that currently fields 32 Division I varsity teams.

He will have to transition from filling out lineup cards (something he didn't always do perfectly) to running an extensive array of sports for both men and women.

Valentine's experience with the Red Sox was clearly unsuccessful, but his career hasn't always been marked by failure.

In 2000 Valentine led the New York Mets to the World Series, but they were defeated by the Yankees in five games.

In 2005 Valentine, managing in Japan, led the Chiba Lotte Mariners to a Japan Series Championship.

Through it all, Valentine has always been known for his outspoken persona and a tendency to try grabbing the spotlight.

At times his antics have produced great results, other times they've become far more problems than they were worth.

It will be interesting to see how his personality either blends in, or conflicts with, what is typically expected from an athletic director at New England's second largest Catholic University.
