Chung lost his job last week with Devin McCourty at safety.
A few weeks ago, the New England Patriots’ secondary was searching for depth, but now there’s a logjam at safety and it appears veteran Patrick Chung could end up the odd man out.
Chung missed four games with shoulder and hamstring injuries, and New England traded for cornerback Aqib Talib and moved Devin McCourty to safety while he was gone. When Chung returned for Thursday’s win over the Jets, his usual job was taken and he was forced to serve as the nickel back.
Chung toed the company line when asked about his situation Wednesday, saying he thinks McCourty is “doing pretty good” and he’ll play “wherever Coach wants me.”
Chung said he stayed sharp during his time away by putting himself through mental reps, and he'll continue to do so if his snaps remain sparse (he played 22 against the Jets). But he’ll also appreciate any opportunity he gets to touch the field, using it to prove his worth.
“Felt good to get back out there and dig my cleats in the grass a little bit,” Chung said. “We have five more games, and hopefully a lot more.”
