The Patriots signed Derrick Martin to take his place.

Last year a hero, today a free agent.

In an unexpected move, the New England Patriots released cornerback Sterling Moore Wednesday evening.

The team also signed defensive back Derrick Martin and linebacker Mike Rivera. New England had an open roster spot after parting ways with linebacker Bobby Carpenter.

Moore, a second-year player, served predominately in a reserve role and appeared in all eight games. Last year in the AFC title game, he broke up a pass in the end zone intended for Lee Evans that helped send the Patriots to the Super Bowl.

New England’s pass defense ranks 28th in the league and has allowed 42 plays of 15 or more yards.

Martin (5-foot-10, 198 pounds)was signed by the Patriots on Aug. 4 but was released prior to the start of the season. He played 14 games for the Giants last season and finished with 12 tackles.

The 27-year-old’s best season came in 2007 when he recorded 40 tackles and two interceptions for the Baltimore Ravens.

Rivera spent last season on New England’s practice squad and was released in September.
