Carl CrawfordBoston Red Sox's Carl Crawford is recovering from wrist surgery and will now have his elbow checked by a specialist.

Weeks have turned into months, and Carl Crawford's return to the Boston Red Sox lineup continues to be delayed.

When he'll play for the Red Sox, nobody knows. The Red Sox have avoided a timetable, and even the casually discussed goals of Opening Day, May 1 and anytime in May have proven inaccurate.

ESPN.com reported that Crawford will see specialist James Andrews to have his sore left elbow checked. Crawford is still recovering from wrist surgery in January.

Andrews is known for his work with athletes undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery.

Crawford has played some extended spring training games, but has not begun throwing. The latest news will likely delay his return to an even later, undtermined date.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has repeatedly said that he would not put a timetable on health of a player. He has also suggested that Crawford might be able to begin play in the outfield, but underhand or hand off the ball to another player, rather than start throwing.

The absence of Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) contributed to Boston's acquisition of Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd for pitcher Michael Bowden last week.
