Maine won 15 games for the Mets as a starter in 2007, but the Sox see him as a reliever.
Pitcher John Maine has signed a minor-league contract with the Boston Red Sox that includes an invitation to spring training, according to his agent.
The agent, Rex Gary, told Steve DeShazo of the Fredericksburg Freelance-Star that the Red Sox envision Maine as a relief pitcher. Such a role would be a change of pace for Maine, who has started 105 out of his 108 career appearances with the Baltimore Orioles.
Maine, 30, has a career record of 41–36 with a 4.35 ERA. Due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, he has not pitched in the major leagues since July 2010. He signed a minor-league contract with the Colorado Rockies last January, but went 1-3 with a 7.43 ERA in 11 starts for their Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs before voluntarily leaving the team in June.
Maine's best season was in 2007 when he posted a 15-10 record with a 3.91 ERA for the Mets. He was a sixth-round draft pick by the Orioles in 2002.
