Gov. Patrick did say Thomas is entitled to his views.
BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick says Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas's decision to skip a White House ceremony President Obama hosted for the Stanley Cup champions points to the country's growing loss of "basic courtesy and grace."
Patrick was asked about the snub Thursday during his monthly "Ask The Governor" program on WTKK-FM. He didn't directly criticize Thomas, but he suggested the snub showed disrespect toward the presidency.
Patrick said while he disagreed with many of former President George W. Bush's policies, he was always respectful when they met, calling him "Mr. President" and standing when Bush entered the room.
Patrick added Thomas is a "phenomenal" player and is entitled to his views.
Thomas has said he skipped Monday's ceremony because the federal government was "out of control," but he blamed both parties.
