TORONTO — Joel Hanrahan was back Tuesday but not as the Red Sox closer. Andrew Bailey will continue in that role.

TORONTO — Joel Hanrahan was back Tuesday but not as the Red Sox closer. Andrew Bailey will continue in that role.

Farrell said he may try to work in Hanrahan in low-leverage situations to start out.

"Andrew will remain our closer right now," manager John Farrell said. "First of all, a healthy Joel Hanrahan makes us a better team. Joel is very well aware of — I think there's the need and he's in agreement, some appearances are needed to get under his belt to get back in the flow of things."

Hanrahan was out with a sore right hamstring. His activation was expected following Daniel Bard's demotion to Double-A Portland after Boston's last game on Sunday. Hanrahan made his second rehab outing with Triple-A Pawtucket Sunday.

Bailey's first save attempt was April 15. From that day through games Monday, he's fourth in the majors for strikeouts among relief pitchers with 13. He's thrown eight innings, recorded five of six saves and let up two runs.
