Even before saving the Boston Celtics' season on Sunday, Jason Terry was talking trash.
According to New York Knicks big man Kenyon Martin, Terry said before Game 4: "You're not dancing at my funeral today."
The guard then backed up his words, scoring Boston's final nine points in a 97-90 overtime win. The Celtics will enter Wednesday night's Game 5 still needing a win to prolong their season. That alone should provide enough motivation, but just in case Boston requires any additional lift, New York provided it.
Martin told his teammates to wear "funeral colors" to Game 5, saying, "We're ending it."
Knicks wing J.R. Smith returns Wednesday after serving a one-game suspension for elbowing Terry in the face. Terry admitted before Game 4 that the elbow fueled him, but said afterward that Smith's return shouldn't matter much.
“I don’t care if Patrick Ewing comes back for them,” Terry said. “We’re going to treat it like a Game 7.”
All "every game is a Game 7" sentiment aside, is there any chance Smith's elbow helped wake up Terry and his teammates?
"Someone said it (Saturday). Maybe that elbow -- who knows? -- changed the events for all of us," head coach Doc Rivers said after Game 4. "Definitely Jason Terry was angry that it happened. He let his teammates know."
