BOSTON —  Craig Breslow was touched up for three runs without recording an out Tuesday night in his first rehab appearance. The left-handed reliever is coming back from left shoulder tendinitis.

Pitching as the starter for Double-A Portland at home, Breslow let up two straight singles, a walk and then a double. He threw 23 pitches, 12 for strikes. The conditions were miserable in Maine, much like they were in Boston for a 13-0, rain-shortened loss to the A's at Fenway Park.

Breslow was back in the Red Sox clubhouse after the game. He said his shoulder isn't a problem.

"I felt good," Breslow said. "I’m not one of those people who just dismiss the results, like it was rehab and I got my work in. I definitely need to be better. But it was definitely a step forward."

"I wasn’t really able to throw anything but a fastball for a strike. In the pen I felt really good. I was comfortable. I was throwing the ball really well. But I think when I got in the game I was trying to do a little more and lost a little bit of the feel. Obviously at any level when you eliminate anything but a fastball you’re not going to be in a good place."

Breslow's still set to go out for another rehab outing, likely with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday.

"Craig pitched tonight in the same conditions up in Portland and it’s likely that he’ll get at least one more outing," manager John Farrell said.
