BOSTON — A game-time temperature of 42 degrees that felt like 34 degrees and a wet, unpleasant night kept David Ortiz out of the lineup Tuesday against the A's. He's also never done well against Oakland starter Bartolo Colon: 6-for-46 (.130) with one home run and 15 strikeouts lifetime.

"No, not hurting, scheduled down day," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "The combination of the weather conditions it was kind of a logical day to... be able to give him a blow."

Ortiz is 6-for-12 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs, one walk and two strikeouts since returning from the disabled list. The Red Sox are going to listen to Ortiz's needs as he comes back from a bothersome right heel.

"I think the one thing that we don’t want to do is to pin ourselves into an exact number of games played and then a scheduled down day," Farrell said. "It certainly depends on how he’s feeling, his involvement will go a long way in this, but I think we need to build in an occasional day off."
