Stacking up the goals and wins, Westfield State women's lacrosse defeats Worcester State 19-10; waits for Bridgewater

Kyle Smith of Longmeadow has a career day, but UMass men's lacrosse fell 15-14 to No. 17 Drexel in a wild offensive game at Garber Field.

Senior Maura Stack of Wilbraham scored a season-high six goals, and freshman goalkeeper Mimi Khampaeng of Hampden made 10 saves to lead the Westfield State women’s lacrosse team to a 19-10 road romp past Worcester State.

The victory sets up a huge Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference clash between the Owls (8-2.3-0) and Bridgewater State (10-1, 2-0) Tuesday night at 7 at Westfield.

Bridgewater lost its first game Wednesday to Mount Holyoke 16-10 in a non-conference contest. The Owls also fell to the Lyons 11-6 in the season opener.

Stack has 32 goals and 9 assists. Freshman Sam Lungarini of Agawam also contributed a goal, her 11th.

Western New England 19, New England 18: Taylor Scialdone compiled six goals and three assists to lead WNE (9-4, 4-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference) in a thriller over the University of New England (5-7, 3-2) at Golden Bear Stadium.

Springfield 15, Wellesley 7: Michelle Dorsey of Wilbraham and Kelly Gallo of Westfield scored three goals apiece for the Pride (8-6, 3-2 NEWMAC).

Connie Nielsen led SC with four goals. Goalkeeper Anne Versprille made 11 saves.

Wheaton 10, Mount Holyoke 9: Melanice Sharick of Amherst scored three goals and added a key assist, and Mia Cambi of Longmeadow registered two assists as Wheaton outlasted Mount Holyoke in the contest at South Hadley between teams both nicknamed the Lyons.

The win enabled Wheaton (7-5, 5-0) to remain unbeaten in the NEWMAC. Mount Holyoke is 9-3, 2-2.

With Mount Holyoke trailing 9-7, freshman Catherine Ryan of Longmeadow scored to cut the deficit to one, but Sharick set up freshman Brooke Sabol for the winner with 6:45 left.

Freshman Julia Bell of Longmeadow had two goals and four assists for Mount Holyoke.

Amherst 6, Tufts 5: Senior tri-captain Marta Randall scored with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Jeffs (7-4, 4-4) at Medford.

MEN’S LACROSSE

Drexel 15, UMass 14: Sophomore Grant Whiteway scored two of his career-high five goals to open the fourth quarter and give the Minutemen (5-7, 0-4) a 13-12 lead, but the No. 17 Dragons (9-3, 4-1) answered with four straight tallies in the Colonial Athletic Association game at Garber Field.

Senior Kyle Smith of Longmeadow earned career highs in points (8) and assists (5).

Springfield 15, Mass. Maritime 4: The Pride (5-7, 3-0) coasted to a Pilgrim League victory after taking a 10-0 lead in the first half at Stagg Field.

SOFTBALL

Elms 9-1, Southern Vermont 0-0: Sophomore Jessica Colson of Agawam and freshman Jamie Miller of Chicopee hurled the shutouts for the host Blazers (7-12, 6-4 New England Collegiate Conference).

Elms freshman Taylor Skinner was 2-2 with three RBIs in the first game.

AIC 2-3, Pace 4-1: Lyndsey Letourneau, Stephanie Belanger and Katie Merrill strung together doubles in the bottom of the first in the second game win for American International (9-18, 6-11 NE-10) at Groff Field.

BASEBALL

Springfield 3-0, Wheaton 4-1: Oliver Collette (2-0) scattered five hits in the 3-1 first-game win as the Pride (10-3, 7-9 NEWMAC) gained a split against No. 12 Wheaton (20-7, 12-2) at Berry-Allen Field.
