Kelly will be given the opportunity to continue his career in New England.
The New England Patriots search for another anchor on the defensive line has led them defensive tackle Tommy Kelly.
The former Oakland Raider has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the Patriots, according to the NFL Network, and will likely be given the opportunity to win a roster spot in training camp.
The 32-year-old has recorded 34.5 sacks over the course of his career, including nine over the last two seasons.
Kelly signed as an undrafted free agent in 2004 and quickly emerged as one of the team Oakland’s better defensive players. He was given a seven-year, $50.1 million contract in 2008, but his $6.5 million salary for 2013 was deemed too rich and he was released in March.
In New England, Kelly (6-foot-6, 325 pounds) will be given the opportunity to continue his career if he proves capable of contributing in a limited role. Over the last few years Bill Belichick has given similar shots to players such as Albert Haynesworth and Jonathan Fanene.
Kelly will be competing for a job against the likes of Vince Wilfork, Brandon Deaderick, Myron Pryor, Kyle Love and CFL import Armond Armstead.
