Just in time: Michelle Dorsey of Wilbraham scores the winner for Springfield College women's lacrosse in rematch of NEWMAC title clash with Babson

Sophomore Michelle Dorsey of Wilbraham scored with only 4.7 seconds remaining to lift the Springfield College women’s lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Babson in a rematch of last year’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championship game at Stagg Field.

The Pride defeated Wheaton 7-6 in the semifinal, and Babson 10-6 to capture the NEWMAC title last year at Babson Park.

Junior Kelly Gallo of Westfield scored two goals for the Pride, which snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 6-5, 1-2 while Babson slipped to 4-5, 1-1.

Freshman Connie Nielsen scored a game-high four goals for Springfield. Anne Versprille made five saves in goal.

After a timeout with 28 seconds remaining, Dorsey moved the ball in close, and was fouled with 6.6 seconds to play. She then converted the free-position opportunity with a shot over the left shoulder of junior goaltender Julie Bahrestani.

The Pride next hosts Smith Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Mount Holyoke 17, MIT 6: Longmeadow natives Catherine Ryan and Julia Bell played a big part as Mount Holyoke improved to 8-2, 2-1 NEWMAC with the home victory over the Engineers (4-7, 1-2).

Ryan recorded a game-high four assists to go along with one goal, and Bell, a Wilbraham & Monson Academy graduate, scored two goals and added an assist.

Sophomore Kirsten Kilburn scored a game-high five goals for MHC, which hosts Bridgewater State Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Westfield State 16, Fitchburg State 6: Senior attack Maura Stack of Wilbraham scored four goals and assisted on three others, and freshman goalkeeper Mimi Khampaeng of Hampden stopped seven shots for the host Owls (6-2, 2-0 MASCAC).

Wheaton 13, Smith 5: Freshman defender Mia Cambi of Longmeadow scored two goals to help the Lyons (5-4, 3-0 NEWMAC) defeat the Pioneers (3-8, 0-2) at Northampton.

Cambi has six goals and four assists.

Sophomore Melanie Sharick of Amherst scored a goal, and freshman Anna Carando of Easthampton contributed an assist for Wheaton.

Christina Vara scored twice for the Pioneers.

Becker 13, Elms 6: Sophomore attack Lauren Mazza of Agawam scored five goals for Elms (2-6, 0-1 NECC) in the loss to Becker (3-7, 1-0) at Leicester.

Saint Michael's 11, AIC 8: Freshman midfielder Stephanie Dufresne of Belchertown scored a goal and added two assists for the visiting Yellow Jackets (1-9, 0-7).

Middlebury 13, Amherst 4: The third-ranked and host Panthers (9-0, 6-0 NESCAC) broke out to a 5-0 lead in breezing past the Jeffs (6-3, 3-3). Senior Marta Randall scored twice for Amherst.

MEN’S LACROSSE

Towson 9, UMass 5: Senior attack Will Manny became the 10th player in program history to record 100 career goals with his one score, but the Minutemen (5-6) remained winless in Colonial Athletic Association play at 0-3 with the loss at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Kyle Smith of Longmeadow recorded a goal and assist for UMass, which faces No. 12 Drexel next Saturday at Garber Field at 1 p.m.

Middlebury 10, Amherst 8: Junior Devin Acton scored seven seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-8, but the Lord Jeffs (3-6, 2-4 NESCAC) could not pull off the upset over the Panthers (8-1, 5-1) at Gooding Field.

BASEBALL

Elms 4-13, Newbury 1-3: Senior lefthander John Russell of Springfield threw a complete game four-hitter in the first game, and the Blazers put up six runs in both the third and fifth innings of the second to earn the sweep at Brockton.

Elms (7-9. 2-1 NECC) junior designated hitter Sean Farnsworth of Westfield went 4 for 8 with five RBIs in the doubleheader. In the second game, sophomore first baseman Geoffrey Frost of Ludlow had two RBIs.

UMass 2, Rhode Island 0: Sophomore Andrew Grant (2-3) hurled a four-hitter for UMass (4-16, 1-4 A-10) at Kingston, R.I.

SOFTBALL

Springfield 6-5, Clark 0-0: Jennifer Joseph struck out 11 in five innings in the opener, and Ashley Marino scattered six hits, and struck out nine with a complete game in the second as the Pride improved to 10-12, 5-1 with the NEWNAC sweep over Clark (9-7, 4-4) at Potter Field.

Fordham 17, UMass 11: The Minutewomen (7-17, 4-2 A-10) dug an early hole by allowing eight Fordham (2-12, 5-3) runs in the third inning at Sortino Field.

Taylor Carbone, Christine Della Vecchia, and Tiffany Weeks and all went 3 for 4 for UMass, which compiled a season-high 18 hits.

The loss snapped a 20-game home winning streak for the Minutewomen with Fordham again the last winner April 30, 2011.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Daniel Webster 3, Elms 1: Joe Walz of East Longmeadow recorded a match-high 17 kills to help Daniel Webster (15-11, 10-2 NECC) to a 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Elms (14-13, 7-5) at Nashua, N.H.

Junior setter Kevin Welsh of Wilbraham compiled 38 assists for Elms, which concluded its regular season at 14-13, 7-5.

MEN’S TENNIS

AIC 6, Saint Anselm 3: Cass Schwab, Thijs Bik, Kenzo Kauffmann, and Jakub Simicek were winners in singles play for AIC (2-3, 2-3 NE-10)
