Ryan Sweeney was told Thursday night after a 6-1 Red Sox win over the Twins that he would not make the Red Sox, a decision that appears to give Mike Carp and Jackie Bradley Jr. the final two roster spots.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Ryan Sweeney said he hadn't heard anything about his roster situation shortly after the Red Sox downed the Twins, 6-1, on Thursday night at JetBlue Park. Then Red Sox manager John Farrell walked into the clubhouse and beckoned to Sweeney.
"They didn't purchase my contract, so basically I'm the odd man out," Sweeney said when he came back.
Mike Carp and Jackie Bradley Jr. appear to have made the Red Sox, then. The Sox were down to three players for two spots entering Thursday night: Sweeney, Carp and Bradley Jr.
Bradley Jr. and Carp both said they had not heard anything.
Sweeney likely will move on to another organization now rather than accept an assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. His regular-season Red Sox career ostensibly ends with 63 games played and a .260/.303/.373 line with 19 doubles, two triples, no home runs and 16 RBIs.
This spring, Sweeney had a .217/.308/.239 line in 46 at-bats.
