The injured stars are showing no significant improvement.
The Red Sox injury news out of Fort Myers was not good Monday.
Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated that Jose Iglesias would be the starting Opening Day shortstop if Stephen Drew is still sidelined by the concussion he suffered on March 7.
The DH spot is less clear and could be rotated among several players. David Ortiz did not take batting practice as hoped on Monday, and his chance of being ready for the April 1 opener at New York looks almost nil.
Farrell told media that Ortiz "was not ready for that next step,'' as his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury enters its eighth month.
Drew will be sent to a concussion specialist if his symptoms do not improve by Tuesday. Drew was hit on the helmet by a pitch on March 7, and what first appeared to be a small matter is mushrooming into a major concern.
Drew still has some issues with vision and loud noise, among other symptoms.
Iglesias is a sparkling defensive player who has retooled his batting stance this spring. He has shown more power, though his average is still low at .220.
Pedro Ciriaco is the likely infield backup.
It looks nearly certain that neither Ortiz nor Drew will be on the roster by Opening Day.
