The clubhouse is full of characters who seem to be having fun.
"In Little League, I was the short, fat kid. They put guys like that at catcher in those days, and I liked it.'' - David Ross.
"Juggling, even though I can still do only three balls at once. A few card tricks, too.'' Pitcher Ryan Dempster,, when asked what useful tricks he's picked up over a 15-year career.
"I know what the last two years have been. I have to re-prove myself.'' Often-injured reliever Andrew Bailey, who was moved from the closer's job to setup when Joel Hanrahan was acquired.
"He's more talkative than J.D.'' - Manager John Farrell, when asked what differences he notices between shortstop Stephen Drew and his brother, the former outfielder.
"I told him if he wanted, I'd leave him tickets at the gate after he retired,'' Dempster, when asked what he told a young player who said he'd grown up watching Dempster pitch. The 35-year-old plans to pitch for many more years.
"I hope so. I want to, but I have a lot to improve on. I'm not there yet, but I want to get there.'' Outfield prospect Jackie Bradley Jr., on whether he's a major league-caliber centerfielder yet.
"What I know is that Mike will not stop being vocal. I'm sure he'll just do so in the right way and at the appropriate time.'' Farrell, when asked how Mike Napoli will be able to channel his take-charge instincts, now that he is playing first base and not catching.
