Boys basketball: Jordan Castillo and Sam Sharpe score 27 points each for Vikings.

The race for the Tri-County League boys basketball title is tightening up.

Smith Vocational played itself into contention Tuesday with a big victory against one of the league's top squads.

Jordan Castillo and Sam Sharpe each scored a season-high 27 points as Smith Voc. edged visiting St. Mary 74-72. Justin Crosby, who led all scorers with 34 points, missed a potential tying layup at the buzzer for St. Mary.

The Vikings (8-6, 8-2) took the lead at the end of each quarter to hold off the Saints (11-4, 8-2).

"It was a tough game all the way through," Smith Voc. coach Akara Holder said. "We were going back and forth. We were taking leads at the ends of the quarters by making adjustments."

Matt Plasse and Anthony Garde added 18 and 11 points, respectively, for St. Mary. Crosby used his superior driving ability to penetrate the lane for most of his buckets.

Smith Voc. takes on Dean Tech, which is undefeated in the TCL, on Friday.

"That should be another heavy-duty matchup," Holder said.
