Boston Celtics trade rumors 2013: Kyle Lowry interests Celtics after Rajon Rondo injury

Lowry, 26, is averaging 13.5 points, 5.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds with a gaudy 21.3 Player Efficiency Rating (PER).

With point guard Rajon Rondo now out for the season, the Boston Celtics will almost certainly make at least minor roster changes.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, Boston was interested in Mike James if the Dallas Mavericks had not extended his 10-day contract for the entire season (which they did). Blowing up the Celtics roster is now a stronger possibility, but there are real obstacles to having a fire sale of Boston's veterans.

Stein also reported that Boston has shown "exploratory interest" in Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay, cautioning that adding Gay's contract probably doesn't make sense for the Celtics at this point.

More likely, according to Stein, is for the Celtics to go after Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry. The 26-year old, averaging 13.5 points, 5.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds with a gaudy 21.3 Player Efficiency Rating (PER), is rumored to be available partially because Jose Calderon has played so well for the Raptors. Ken Berger of CBS Sports also reported earlier this week that Lowry "has not made many friends in his new surroundings."

Making $5.75 million this year and slated to earn $6.21 million next season, Lowry possesses a very reasonable contract considering his production. But it's unclear whether Boston has the right assets to net him -- Toronto surrendered Gary Forbes and a first-round pick to acquire Lowry, and isn't likely to hand him over for a bag of string cheese.
