Shane Huber recommits to UMass football team

Huber's recruiting saga appears to be over, as he announced late Friday night that he had recommitted to UMass.

The UMass recruiting soap opera, "As Shane Huber Turns," evidently had one more plot twist before reaching its conclusion.

New Jersey linebacker Shane Huber, who caused quite the stir with some of his comments after decommitting from the UMass football program, appears to have reversed course once again, and decided to stick with the Minutemen, according to his Twitter account, where he posted a picture with UMass gear on, then tweeted at me the following:

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker had originally committed in July, then announced on Dec. 30 that he was re-opening his recruitment.

On the heels of that announcement, Huber was quoted in a Jan. 1 article on NJ.com citing perceived instability within the program as one of the reasons for his decommitment.

"One of the things that have been a little troublesome to me is the lack of support the school had moving to FBS football. It wasn't just something I jumped right into. I talked to all my family and coaches, and I thought it was in my best interest to de-commit and re-open my recruitment," Huber said in the article. "I wasn't feeling 100 percent comfortable. There has been some lack of stability within the program so I just thought I would open it back up and see what happens from here."

Charley Molnar, who under NCAA rules couldn't specifically comment on Huber's situation, responded on Jan. 2 by saying he didn't think the misinformation regarding a potential return to FCS for the program was an issue.

On Jan. 9, UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy issued a statement in support of the school's football program after a couple of dubious quotes in both the New York Times and Boston Globe regarding the program's future.

All in all, it appears to much ado about very little, because Huber — a two-star recruit who had previous offers from Central Florida, Buffalo, Temple and Navy according to Rivals.com, is back in the fold.

National Signing Day, when high school players officially sign their letters of intent to, is set for Feb. 6, and Charley Molnar will appear at an event at Amherst Brewing Company at 6 p.m. to announce the 2013 class to the public.
