Nearly eight months removed from a national championship, Josh Hawkins heads into his senior season already knowing a professional career awaits him.
The former Amherst Regional High School standout, who helped lead Loyola (Md.) University to the NCAA Division I title last May at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, was chosen in Friday's Major League Lacrosse draft.
Hawkins, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound midfielder, will head to Canada to play for the Hamilton Nationals, who selected him with the No. 5 overall pick in the first round.
After three stellar seasons at Amherst, Hawkins spent his senior year and a postgraduate year at Deerfield Academy, where he helped the Big Green win two Western New England titles.
Last season at Loyola, Hawkins played in 15 games and finished second on the Greyhounds with 63 ground balls. Before he goes pro, Hawkins and his Loyola teammates embark on their quest for a return trip to Foxborough, beginning Feb. 16 at Delaware.
