The trophy racks need six months of drying before scoring can be done.

They may soon be calling Massachusetts the trophy rack state, as not only is a non-typical bow bag buck of national dimensions being scored, but now an unbelievable second non-typical animal has been downed.

Bill Sniezek of Adams forwarded a report that Craig Luscier of Dalton downed a 24-point whitetail deer by shotgun but the majority of tines are tall, reach-for-the-sky points, sprinkled with lesser ones of course.

Outdoor writer Gene Chague, a Johnny-on-the-spot when the animal was being checked, said with a little luck the animal could have had even more tines.

An outstanding writer, Gene indicated that perhaps additional points had been broken off and others may have fallen short of the size they must reach to count.

It marked the first shotgun score for Craig, normally a bow hunter.

It is time for the Valley District to record a record animal to keep pace with the Worcester and Berkshire ones.

Earlier, Dan Daigle of Rutland shot a 16-pointer that is well on its way to setting a new state bow-kill buck.

“Holy moly, Batman, it appears strange things are happening in little old Massachusetts! Warm up the Batmobile!”

“Warm it up yourself, masked man, I’m heading there to set a new muzzle loading record,” the lone ranger shouted.

And they headed off into the sunset with a hearty “Hi-ho, Silver!” and a “Giddy-up, Scout.”

Did I mix up any of my old radio or TV programs? Never mind.

Meanwhile I’ll hunker low in my blind, Civil War ball tosser in hand, hoping to spot any Rebel soldier trying to sneak up on me, and dampen my powder so Old Yankee.

Betsy will misfire as she did during my last two muzzle loader chances at a whitetail.

Couldn’t help but wonder if you misfired during war if you could ask the enemy to wait up for a moment while you reloaded.

I mean two-non typical possible record bucks recorded in the same season – who do we think we are? White tail capital of North America?

MEANWHILE: Good friend Larry Morley of Granby, the smoke signal sender for the Chicopee Sportsman Club, had some private matters to take care of.

His 17-year-old grandson, Colin, downed a big buck, an 8-pointer, with an estimated live weight of 225 pounds. He was hunting Quabbin Reservoir with his granddad and father, Larry Jr.

It was his second deer in three- ears of hunting.

Larry, still busting buttons and for good reason, said his grandson did not have a chance to scout as he was preparing for and playing in the Western Massachusetts Super Bowl for South Hadley.
