Doug Campbell, of Berlin, Conn., provided the "eyes in the sky" this season as Millis teen Tommy Barrett Jr. tore up the Valenti Modified Racing Series. Along the way, the duo became friends with former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour team owner Mario Fiore, of Agawam.
Using Fiore's many connections in NASCAR, Campbell landed a chance to spot for JJ Yeley at three Sprint Cup races (New Hampshire, Dover, Charlotte) this past fall. On Thursday, Fiore revealed via Facebook that Campbell, 20, had received a more permanent position.
Campbell confirmed the posting and revealed that, beginning with testing at Daytona International Speedway in January, he will be spotting for Tommy Baldwin Racing, which fielded cars last season for Dave Blaney (No. 36) and David Reutimann (No. 10). The relationship will continue through Speedweeks in February, and hopefully further.
According to Fiore, additional Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series spotting duties will also come Campbell's way in 2013.
Before then, though. Campbell is preparing for his move to North Carolina.
Barrett, 17, would be a good addition to a team hoping to make a full-time run on the Whelen Modified Tour in 2013, even without his trusty spotter.
