The Boston Red Sox have yet to address their starting pitching, but took a step toward adding bullpen depth on Thursday afternoon.
Gerry Fraley of The Dallas Morning News reports that the Red Sox have signed relief pitcher Koji Uehara to a one-year deal, contingent on the 38-year-old passing a physical.
Uehara has been in the majors for four seasons, during which time he has been used primarily as a relief pitcher.
For his career he is 5-9 with a 2.89 ERA and 0.921 WHIP ratio.
During the past season he appeared in 37 games for the Texas Rangers, pitching 36 innings with a 1.75 ERA and 0.639 WHIP ratio.
Uehara will join a bullpen that includes Andrew Bailey, Mark Melancon, Andrew Miller, Junichi Tazawa and Alfredo Aceves.
