Johnson played in Japan in 2010-11, averaging nearly 16 points a game.
SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Armor announced Tuesday that they have acquired Damian Johnson from the NBA D-League’s available player pool. To make room on the roster, the Armor waived Alejo Rodriguez.
Johnson, a 6-foot 7 forward, played in 11 games (four starts) with the Bakersfield Jam this season, averaging 2.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 20.0 minutes after joining the team via Bakersfield’s local player tryouts. Prior to joining the Jam, Johnson played for the Oita Heat Devils in Japan’s BJ League during the 2010-11 season, averaging 15.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 47 games (five starts). He also played for the Miami Heat’s summer league team in 2010.
Johnson spent four years at the University of Minnesota, where he averaged 7.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 127 career games for the Golden Gophers. The Thibodaux, LA, native graduated following the 2009-2010 season.
Rodriguez, whom the Armor waived, averaged 0.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 7.3 minutes in seven games for the team.
Johnson joined the Armor for practice Tuesday and will be available when the Armor host the Erie BayHawks on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the MassMutual Center.
