It appears the sides were working Tuesday toward a contract.
The prospect of Shane Victorino in the 2013 Red Sox outfeld continues to gain traction.
ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick tweeted that things are "moving fast'' toward a deal. Reports said the Red Sox have offered a three-year deal at $38 million.
By all accounts, Tuesday was a day of serious discussion by the Red Sox and Victorino, turned what had been a little-discussed prospect into a real possibility, perhaps even a likelihood.
Victorino, 32, is a switch-hitter who has played most of his career in centerfield. He has great speed and could play right in Boston.
Victorino hit .255 last year, when the Phillies traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in midseason. He has been a No. 2 hitter in the order for much of his career, but has flexibility.
He is a .275 career hitter since 2003, with 201 stolen bases, including 39 in 2012.
