Cody Williams ran for two touchdowns to pace Central against a gritty Westfield squad.
SPRINGFIELD -- Their record might not be so imposing, but take note: the Westfield Bombers might be the region’s toughest two-win team. Central saw the tenacious Whip City squad up close and personal as the Golden Eagles came away with a razor-thin 19-14 victory at Berte Field.
It was those pugnacious Bombers to score first, as Ben Geshwind snagged a 55-yard pass from quarterback John Toomey with just a pinch under three minutes left to go in the first quarter.
Central’s Cody Williams, a high school facsimile of collegiate Heisman contender and fellow dual-threat quarterback, Collin Klein of Kansas State, knotted things up at six points apiece with a 33-yard run near the close of the first half. Williams cris-crossed his way through the Westfield defense en route to the end zone.
Williams would later score the game’s decisive touchdown with a 28-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Central running back Troy Morrow also gave the Golden Eagles a rushing score in the third quarter.
Morrow’s ruin measured 25 yards and gave Central a 13-6 lead.
Westfield got to within five points of the Central lead as Geshwind ran in for a touchdown from just outside the end zone. The Bombers looked to spring from the momentum of the touchdown, but with time not on their side, simply could not stop a Central attack that moved the chains late.
