Williams later apologized in a post-game tweet.
FOXBOROUGH — The 24-0 loss stung, but the biggest national takeaway from UMass’ loss to Bowling Green was D’Metrius Williams’s halftime tweeting spree.
Williams tweeted several things (including one responding to me), before eventually taking the tweets off of his account.
After the game, coach Charley Molnar was made aware of the situation and said the following:
“Immature on his part, obviously. Obviously, we’ve already discussed that as a staff policy, but I’ll take the blame on that and say I just didn’t drive it home enough. I guess I’ve got to say it every week, ‘Don’t tweet during halftime.’ But he did. I’ll deal with it, but we have guys make mistakes every day. There’s mistakes on every play out there, we make a mistake at halftime, coaches make mistakes, I made mistakes out there today. We’re all complicit. He made a mistake, and he’ll suffer the consequences, but it’s not a death sentence for him by any stretch.”
Williams then apologized with another tweet after the game.
can't say sorry enouqh .. juss qotta move on and learn from it .. #THANKGOD 🙏👆

UMass and the NCAA don’t have any formal rules against tweeting during games, so it looks like whatever punishment Williams will face will come from Molnar.
