Boston Red Sox's Carl Crawford may look at elbow surgery "sooner rather than later,'' according to a report.

ESPN.com reporter Gordon Edes has tweeted that Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford may have Tommy John surgery "sooner rather than later.''

Edes credited the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham as the source.

Crawford had hoped to play this season with a fragile left elbow, even while knowing he will likely need surgery at some point. With Boston's playoff hopes in eclipse, the desire to wait may be evaporating.

Edes also tweeted, courtesy of Chris Mellen, that Red Sox left-hander and high draft choice Brian Johnson was hit in the face by his second pitch thrown in the Futures Game at Fenway. Red Sox spokesperson Pam Ganley said Johnson was rested comfortably but had multiple orbital fractures on the left side of his face, but with no sign of concussion.
