Three straight.
Not too shabby for member Matt Perry and A.J. Oleksak.
The pair won its third straight championship division title at the 109th June Invitation at Springfield Country Club on Sunday.
“This was really neat for us . . . we had a great weekend, against great competition,” said Perry, a fifth-year member at the West Springfield club. “We just dinged and donged out there. We play well together.”
Perry, 28, and Oleksak, a 26-year-old member at Longmeadow CC, made four birdies during a five-hole stretch on the back nine of the final to defeat Mark Cady and Derek Yvon, 4 and 3.
“We always feel that our matches start on the back nine,” Perry said. “The fifth, sixth, seventh, eight holes are tough . . but then 10, 11 and the par 5s at 12, 13 and 15 give us a chance to make things happen with our length.”
Perry birdied Nos. 11, 12 and 15 in the final, and Oleksak birdied 13.
“They had good lucks too, their putts just didn’t fall,” Perry said. “And Derek was a club champion when he was a member here. he’s a big kid, who can hit the ball a country mile. They are a good team.”
Perry and Oleksak posted a 2-up win over past champions Brian Foley and Mike Burke in the morning semifinals.
“I work as an insurance agent advisor, for Brian, so I wasn’t sure if I’d have a job on Monday,” Perry joked.
Perry and Oleksak, who have a combined handicap of .6, were qualifying medalists at 66.
“A.J.’s dad (Mike) has won eight times and he also won three in a row . . . so it’s fun to see all the names and history of this tournament,” Perry said.
Springfield CC runs its Women’s June Invitational Friday through Sunday.
