Softball: Tessa Cote was the hitting and pitching star.

This was a good first round test for Granby.

Granby was able to prevail, 3-1 in an outstanding high school girls softball Division III tournament pitching match-up between Tessa Cote and Megan Logan on Thursday.

Both Cote, of Granby, and Logan, of Holyoke Catholic were outstanding.

Cote was just a little bit better and that made the difference in a close and very competitive game between the eighth-seeded Rams and No. 11 Gaels.

"Tessa has had a great year for us,'' Granby coach Gary Casey said. "I was concerned because we were facing a very good pitcher, but we found a way to get the win.''

Thanks to Cote, who scattered three hits ansd had nine strikeouts.

"She was in a zone,'' Casey said.

Cote enabled the Rams to overturn a 1-0 deficit with a two-run single in the third inning that proved to be the difference.

Logan was also tough. Fresh off a 17-strikeout game on Monday, Logan allowed only five hits and had eight strikeouts.

"Megan is tough to beat when she's on,'' Casey said.

Granby will advance to play unbeaten Franklin County Tech (20-0) on Monday.
