Backstrom received a match penalty at the end of regulation during Game 3 Monday for intent to injure.
Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom has been suspended for one game for his cross-checking incident, which occurred at the end of regulation in Game 3 of the team's Eastern Conference quarterfinal match-up with the Boston Bruins.
TSN's Bob McKenzie first reported it via Twitter.
Backstrom cross-checked Bruins forward Rich Peverley in the face following the Capitals' 4-3 loss to go down 2-1 in the series.
The Capitals alternate captain received a match penalty for intent to injure.
Capitals coach Dale Hunter defended Backstrom saying he was only trying to protect himself and he's not a dirty player. He also claimed that the Bruins have been targeting Backstrom's head throughout the series.
Backstrom will be ineligible to play in Game 4, which is takes place Thursday at the Verizon Center.
